Math Refresher for AI & Machine Learning

Overview

“Math Refresher for AI & Machine Learning” is a complete re-write of the popular “Math Refresher for ML”. This book took over 4 years to write and edit, including 6 new chapters! It is expanded for a wider audience and is a great review prior to the first year of graduate school, or as a refresher for the working professional looking to quickly refresh their skills prior to more difficult engineering and scientific research. This book offers a review of the concepts, approaches and applications of: algebra, trigonometry, linear algebra, calculus, statistics, probability, optimization, estimation and proofs.

To make this book extra special, it is printed with a premium full-color gloss hardcover, and premium 93 opacity 60lb pages with full-color figures.

Extras

  1. Each chapter concludes with a section on common math errors, e.g., “Common Algebraic Errors.” This is very useful as a reminder of mistakes people often make.

  2. Many people find the “Mental Math Tricks,” located in the Appendix, to be very helpful for everyday math (e.g., grocery shopping, sales at your favorite store, etc.) including squaring numbers, percentages, adding fractions, and multiplying large numbers.

  3. Free book chapter: just in case you want to preview the content, a free chapter is available here.

Reviews

  • “Math Refresher is an outstanding book! Not only did I enjoy reading it and working the problems, I kept thinking on how great this book would have been not just for data scientists, but for engineers at all academic levels.” - Dr. Annette Fisher

  • “This book provides a comprehensive refresher of each math discipline required for understanding machine learning and data science.” - Dr. Luke Diaz

Notes for the New Edition

  • This new edition was completely rewritten to make the text clear, more engaging and to improve technical accuracy.

  • Five new chapters were added. The Introduction, Algebra, and Trigonometry were added to lay the foundation for later chapters, and both Estimation and Basic Proofs were added to complete the math review for most engineers and scientists.

  • Every math example and exercise is new. While math examples tend to be very common, to the point of memorization, e.g., 2 x 2 = 4, all numerical examples in this new edition were generated using a pseudo-random number generator. This was changed so the reader does not become complacent with trivial problems or perceived or familiar ``patterns.'' Recent psychology research indicates that the reader is more likely to focus on the math task at hand if there is randomness in the numbers.

  • At the request of my colleagues, “Mental Math Tricks” was added. These “tricks” are often taught in preparatory classes for standardized exams like the SAT or GRE. However, these are also useful in daily life, e.g., calculating the price reduction of a sale (10% off, 35% off, etc.), squaring numbers, or adding and subtracting fractions. Many calculations can be performed mentally with just a few tricks.

  • The original manuscript was unfriendly to colorblind readers; in particular red/green contrasts are troublesome. The new color palette uses orange/blue and red/blue contrast.

  • We are also working to make this book the first of its kind available in Braille. A significant level of effort was invested to create a new math library in Braille that augments or replaces Neimeth Code. This will help a significantly under-served community of blind researchers, engineers, and scientists.

  • Because this book is a math review, a list of additional references are provided in the final section of each chapter.

  • To minimize waste and environmental impact in the printing process, this book is printed in the 8.5” x 5.5” format.
